Arts Schools Network 2013 National Conference ”The Big Apple – Core and All” was a hit in NYC

After a week full of information, insight and inspiration in arts education, the Arts Schools Network’s 2013 National Conference in New York City concluded on Friday, October 25. Ara Guzelimian, Juilliard School Provost and Dean; Rory Pullens, Head of School/Chief Executive Officer at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and incoming ASN President; and Russell Granet, Executive Director, Lincoln Center Education, closed the conference on a pitch-perfect note by sharing their dynamic visions for education in the arts.
This year’s conference, which took place October 22-25, 2013, drew participants from throughout North America and as far away as Scotland. Sessions, performances, and tours took place throughout the city at world-famous arts schools and venues, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre; American Musical and Dramatic Academy, College of Performing Arts; Camp Broadway and Stage Notes; Fiorello H. LaGuardia School of Performing Arts; Fordham University; Juilliard School; Lincoln Center Education; NYU Tisch School of the Arts; The New School: Parsons, Mannes, Lang, Jazz and Drama; and Professional Children’s School.
The excitement of New York’s arts scene was not the only draw for participants. Members tackled key issues in arts education, and shared experiences and knowledge as they explored strategies for new core standards, best practices, career and college pathways, fundraising and crisis management. At the awards luncheon at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, ASN recognized excellence, innovation and leadership in individuals, schools and community partnerships.
ASN also applauded the efforts of outgoing ASN President, Dr. Craig S. During the conference, musical group and On Your Way scholarship program sponsor Earth, Wind & Fire announced that it would also sponsor next year’s On Your Way program. In related news, ASN announced a new program for 2014, On Your Way Junior, which will be sponsored by Booker T. Washington School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, Texas.
