On Your Way – the ASN Student Talent Program

On Your Way provides a forum – and a uniform platform – for students to display their talents in:
• Musical Theater/Acting • Classical Voice • Filmmaking • Visual Arts
Created in partnership with ArtsApp, On Your Way helps students grades 9-12 from ASN member schools enhance their auditioning skills and opportunities as it promotes migrating portfolios to a standard, online digital format for auditions, admissions, and competitions.
The winner in each category will attend the 2012 ASN Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida, January 23-26, 2012
Award winners and their guardians will receive:
• Complimentary registration • Round trip flights • Accommodations for two nights • Passes to Epcot Theme Park at Walt Disney World Resort • One-on-one time with college and conservatory representatives
Winners from each category will perform/exhibit at the Thursday evening Student Talent Recognition Celebration Dinner.
ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
• Open to students grades 9-12 from ASN member schools
• Must apply by November 15, 2011 at 11:59pm CST
• $25 fee per applicant
• Recordings must be uploaded through www.ArtsApp.com/artsschools (see details)*
RULES:
Musical Theater / Acting Applicants must upload a headshot and brief personal statement.
Part One: Musical Theater
Applicants must prepare two brief, contrasting songs from the Broadway repertoire:
• Ballad (1)
• Upbeat selection (1)
• Limit each song to 2 minutes, preferably 32 bars (a verse and a chorus)
• Maximum of 4 minutes total for singing portion of audition will be strictly enforced
Submit EACH selection as its own file
Tips: Select age-appropriate songs that demonstrate vocal quality, phrasing, rhythmic skills, and lyric interpretation. Select songs that express a character's feelings rather than tell a story (avoid narrative songs like "Nothing" from A Chorus Line).
Part Two: Acting
Applicants must prepare two short, contrasting monologues from:
• Modern (post-WW II) literature
• Classical literature
Four-minute time limit for the total acting portion will be strictly enforced
Classical Voice
Works must be performed from memorySubmit EACH selection as its own file:
• Italian art song from the 17th or 18th century
• German or French art song
• Art song in English (not in translation)
Filmmaking (Recognition is for the director only)
Submit one video file or a work that illustrates your knowledge of film/video production, and expresses your original voice. Up to 6 minutes long.
Work that suggests plagiarism will be disqualified.
Visual Arts
Portfolio Guidelines: Work submitted can be in any style or medium (2d, 3d, design, digital arts, painting, photography, time-based, etc) and should show a dedication to and investment in innovation and exploration.
Students should select work that best shows their personal style, technical skills, ideas and creative approaches to subject matter and materials.
Please include:
1. A one-page artist’s statement (with your name on top ), describing your: • goals as an artist • artistic influences • background and interests, including previous art training, and films, literature, or music you enjoy and how they relate to your art work
2. Up to 8 work samples. Please upload images at 72dpi, no larger than 1200 x 1000 pixels.
